Who Are We?

My Backstory-

Where to begin! I’m Josie, the childish half of Vaguely Original. I left High School with an A Grade in (G)CSE Art, and my art teacher desperately wanted me to go to art college. Instead I left school to go and get an office job- BIG mistake! Later on, I spent many years working as a Semi-Professional Photographer, working on a whole lot of different projects. In this time, I became a founding member of a Photographers’ Gallery, had many publications in various magazines, including the front cover for an Alternative/Gothic magazine! One of the biggest photographic projects I ever worked on was a commissioned book, documenting a garden over the span of an entire year. For many years I’ve been my own boss, working for myself in various different areas from web design, to selling vintage and reclaim, and everything in-between! When I was younger I considered myself a bit of a seamstress, I made clothes, toys, even a tailored skirt suit! And somewhere in all of this, I had 3 kids! I’ve always wanted to have more of a creative outlet, but raising kids and working for yourself doesn’t leave you with a lot of free time. I became a very frustrated artist, but with Vaguely Original I have somewhere to post and sell my art alongside my day job. I hope that one day this could be my full time job instead!

About Me-

We’re both pretty similar in that I also love music, especially supporting live bands, I also love tattoos even though I don’t have any yet, and I’m really into fashion too! I’m also a big lover of custom cars and drag racing, especially the old American hot rods! My dream is to one day have my own rusty old Rat Rod, or a Harley Davidson trike! I don’t want either of them for the speed- I want them for the NOISE! I used to have a custom V8 Ford Pop (called The Green Dragon!) and a 1969 Jet Black Mustang. God do I miss them now!! I’m really into Steampunk and Gothic/Alternative fashion, and a big part of Vaguely Original for me is erasing the idea that you have to dress a certain way after you hit a certain age. Clothes are clothes, and age is a number! I love upcycling and making new from old, which is something I really want to bring into Vaguely Original too, I never want to stop creating and get stagnant, I want to always try and keep things new and fresh! Most importantly, I would really like Vaguely Original to be a place for all, and a place to motivate and inspire others to chase what they want in life- Just go for it!

My Backstory-

Well hello! I’m Zoe-Joan, the louder half of Vaguely Original. I’ve always wanted to be an artist of some kind from the day I could hold a crayon, but I guess we start back in high school! I did well in Art at Primary School, and I did pretty well in Art at High School too, but unfortunately 2 years of my final work was lost, meaning I left school with a C in GCSE Art. After leaving school, I applied for an Art And Design course in my nearest College and they were impressed by my portfolio, so I got accepted despite not having any of the qualifications they were looking for. I dropped out of college 3 months later, due to the course not being right for me and battling my temperamental health at the same time. This really put me off working artistically for quite a while! After some time away, I really developed a love for Makeup Art and Bodypainting. I was lucky enough to have the incredible opportunity to do live bodypaints all around the UK, including huge venues like the Olympia Stadium in London. It’s still something I love to do just for fun to this day!

About Me-

I’m really big into rock and metal music (especially live), but I love a good 80’s tune too! I love tattoos, piercings, body mods, and fashion! I could easily spend all my time and money in charity shops piecing outfits together! As you can see from our photos, I love having funky hair colours and styles. I’ve been cutting and dyeing my own hair since I was around 15, and at this point I don’t think there’s a hairstyle or colour I haven’t had! All the way from hair I could sit on, to a mohawk, to a total buzzcut! Unfortunately another big part of my life is Crohn’s Disease, and all the annoying and painful things that come with it! I was diagnosed when I was just a year old, so getting through high school and keeping a regular job has always been incredibly difficult for me. I finally hit breaking point after leaving my last ‘normal job’ and decided I NEEDED to do what makes me happiest, and that’s when Vaguely Original was born! For me, one of the most important things we try to do with Vaguely Original is give back. As an openly queer person myself, creating products every year for Pride Month and being able to give a donation to LGBTQA+ charities is really important to me. As well as this, I always want to be able to use my work to support charities that provide help for people suffering with mental health issues, health conditions, and anything else we can.
